Demolition consisted of timber, concrete and steel structures, including:

  • Four line dolphins, one turning dolphin, wingwalls, dredging, and associated catwalks.
  • Portal frame, ramp towers, upper & lower ramps and aprons.

Rebuild consisted of design, supply, fabrication & installation of a new ‘floating’ berth, including:

  • New concrete floating berth (230 m long x 45 m wide)
  • Swing arm-fender panel system, including hydraulic dampers
  • Drilled caisson-mooring pylon structure
  • Dual level vehicle access ramp & aprons
  • Maintenance service access ramp to concrete berth
  • Foot passenger walkway truss
  • Impressed current cathodic protection system
  • Minimized onsite work with use of floating berth

Instead of the traditional deep foundation construction, VanPile proposed a floating berth made up of five concrete pontoons. This ward-winning concept allowed for a significant reduction in overall project cost and schedule, as well as for the terminal to remain fully operational over the project’s duration.
