Given the unique restraints and tight working conditions, prioritazing safety, managing noise levels and ensuring efficient equipment operation were crucial factors for the success of this project.
VanPile’s scope of work:
- Installed a total of 53 piles (drive, auger, rebar cage and pour concrete) sized at 914 0D x 19 w.t. up to 34 mm in length. Sit restraints necessitated multiple splices.
- Installed north and south abutment sheet pile wall to allow construction of pile cap (ground water issues).
Challenges:
- Working within an operational coal terminal.
- Adapting work schedule to trains. Piles were adjacent to tracks, stopping work whenever a locomotive car entered VanPile’s worksite.
- In compliance with North Vancouver’s noise bylaw, hydraulic hammer had noise dampening shroud. Continual sound monitoring in select locations outside Neptune Terminals.
- Tight work space – both south and north abutment. Situational awareness.
- Flexibility in schedule and cooperation with client to complete the job in a safe
manner.
- Assisted whenever needed (within jurisdiction).
- Perfect safety record: PTP, FLRHA, critical lifts forms, weekly safety meeting.
