Vanpile performed maintenance dredge at Kinder Morgan, moving approximately 1300 m3 of contaminated material.

The maintenance dredging was done along berths one, four and five at Kinder Morgan’s Vancouver Wharves location.
The contaminated dredge material was placed by clamshell onto a small, plas-tic lined flat scow. As decant water was not permitted back into Burrard Inlet, a key component was to create a completely sealed holding platform:

  1.  A concrete block wall lined with filter fabric contained the dredgeate.
  2.  A drain pipe installed within the wall allowed for water to pool into a secondary holding area, also contained by a block wall lined in fabric.
  3. The water was then pumped into a tank where it was sorted for pump transfer to Kinder Morgan’s existing filtration system.

After initial drainage of approximately twelve hours, dredge material was trans-ferred by clamshell to haul trucks dockside, where it was to be stockpiled sepa-rately from that of berths four and five. Upon acceptable levels of decant, all materials were hauled to Sumas Remediation’s Burnaby treatment facility.
